LITKANMANI PUBLISHERS AND UPASNA KAKROO ANNOUNCE TWO BOOK DEAL Spring 2027

LITKANMANI PUBLISHERS ANNOUNCEMENT

LitKanmani (Publishers) is excited to announce a two-book deal with author, translator, and editor Upasna Kakroo.

LitKanmani (Publishers) is excited to announce a two-book deal with author, translator, and editor Upasna Kakroo. Upasna is the CEO of Peerbagh, a non-profit committed to amplifying South Asian voices through storytelling, community engagement, and creative workshops.

LitKanmani has acquired Indian subcontinent print publishing rights and global eBook rights for two of her upcoming YA fiction titles. Kakroo's debut YA book, Notes of FreedomNotes of Freedom, is a coming-of-age story with themes of found family, forbidden friendships, systemic oppression, and the constant struggle to find a sense of belonging in a tumultuous world.

Kakroo’s oeuvre is particularly rooted in her lived experiences, intergenerational memory, and diasporic identity. It carries an authenticity that is both personal and universal, offering Young Adult readers an immersive and emotionally resonant narrative world. This acquisition advances LitKanmani’s vision of shaping authentic South Asian representation through its engagement with Kashmiri oral storytelling traditions and folklore, and the exploration of identity and belonging. The title will appeal to readers who have previously engaged with the works of Aisha Saeed, Reem Faruqi, and Veera Hiranandani.

Commenting on the collaboration, she says, ‘Inspired by a rumour in my grandmother's neighborhood, Notes of Freedom is a story of two unusual friends bound by a universal desire for belonging in a time of conflict. Ordinary people leading quiet revolutions are often erased from our collective memories. Working with a young, women-led, independent publisher was important so that this story can authentically envision new spaces, like its characters and creators.’

In an official statement, Founder and Chief Editor of LitKanmani, Akshaya Mohan says, ‘Team LitKanmani and I are thrilled to be working with accomplished visionary Upasna Kakroo on two upcoming titles with striking yet sensitive and relevant themes. Her work as writer, translator, and CEO of Peerbagh aligns strongly with our vision of bringing more diverse South Asian stories to global YA readers. As a young publishing house, we are honoured to be trusted with Upasna’s work and hope to bring it to a wide audience.’

Notes of Freedom is scheduled for release in Spring 2027.
